This year the foundation offers a scholarship in the amount of $4,500. Each candidate was required to submit an essay and is chosen based on G.P.A., career goals, commitment and contribution to the industry or their program.

FGI Foundation Offering Scholarship

Every year Fashion Group Foundation of San Francisco award students in the fashion or interior design curriculum with scholarships. This year the foundation is offering a scholarship in the amount of $4,500. The student must be currently enrolled in an accredited Northern California undergraduate or graduate program.

The winner(s) will also receive a one-year student membership and admission to meetings of the Fashion Group of San Francisco. The criteria for the scholarship includes G.P.A., career goals, commitment and contribution to the industry or their fashion/interior design program.

To be considered for the scholarship download the application and return it by October 8, 2010.

Member Presents Fashion On The Square

FGI member and former Regional Director, Y’Anad Burrell brought the 7th Annual Fashion On The Square to San Francisco this past weekend. This time around the show took centerstage at the Westfield Centre Dome.

"Having the event in a 'mall' type atmosphere turned out to be a very good touch," said Burrell. "One main thing we did not do this year was feature a couture designer but rather remained ready-to-wear with some retail."

After co-host Charleston Pierce pulled audience members onto the stage to give their best catwalk, the show began with back to school looks from Gymboree, Janie & Jack, Crazy 8, Apple Bottom and Old navy. From graphic tees and rompers to playful plaids and multi-colored stripes paired with back packs, the little ones had the audience drooling.

"Coupled with my passion for fashion, it's a beautiful thing to see children, men and women share their talent on the runway while being muses for a designer," said Burrell who prepared the event in less than four months.

Bre from America’s Next Top Model cycle 5 and Jay Nicolas Sario from Project Runway season 7 made special appearances.

The second part of the show co-hosted by Burrell featured a mixture of Summer and Fall looks for adults.

Prima Jiva

“One of the designers that really stood out to me was Prima Jiva. I really enjoyed her collection a lot,” said Dartanian, club promoter and stylist.

Aside from elegant resort wear from Prima Jiva, we saw a variety of flowing fabrics for plus sizes from designer Jill Alexander who was inspired by the Farmer’s Market. “My ideal woman is over size 12, got curves, lives life, has events, want to look and feel good, want fabrics that breath and she just wants to be elegant,” said Alexander.

Throughout the show, we heard two musical performances including Jimmie Reign who sung a couple tunes from her album Pretty Girl.

Suit By Randy Rowden

The show closed with a men’s selection of suits by Randy Rowden. Other participating designers and stores included Bellezza, Daniel Sudar, Picky Studio, J. Jamison, R. Shay Miles and G82 Designs.

The concept of FOTS goes far beyond a runway show and we should expect much more from the annual event according to Burrell. "FOTS is about the 'business of fashion' so we will be expanding into what we have called FOTS institute (workshops, runway training, photo sessions,etc)," she noted.

Proceeds from the event will not only benefit FGI but other non-profit organizations including Until There’s A Cure and Inner City Youth Sports.

7th Annual Fashion On The Square

Don't miss out on this year's Fashion On The Square. The largest and longest running runway show on the West Coast will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010.

It's all happening under the 'Dome' at Westfield Center with celebrity hosts Bre from America's Next Top Model and Jay Sario from Project Runway.

FGI Member And Educator Awarded

Congratulations to FGI member Dr. Connie Ulasewicz as the recipient of the 2010 San Francisco State University Community Service Learning Award for inspiring students to serve the community.

The award was presented by SFSU President Corrigan and funded by the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement.

Connie is an Associate Professor of Apparel Design & Merchandising at SFS, peopleWear SF founding member and a longtime supporter of Discarded to Divine.

Dr. Connie Ulasewicz continues to connect non-profit organizations, apparel design and merchandising students with the greater community.

FGI Participates in EFFEN By Design Event

Fashion Trend Mixer Under the Dome

We teamed up with the Innovative Fashion Council of San Francisco to host a Fashion Trend Mixer, which addressed the relevancy of sustainability in fashion today.

The event held on May 18 featured guest speaker Margaret Sche, who is a former head of Fashion Direction for Forever 21 and fashion editor for FOAM magazine. Sche is dedicated to empowering designers to become more transparent in reducing overall waste through editing and innovation.

Other key influencers who led the panel discussion were Amy Williams and Lynda Grose.

This was a night of cocktails, music, trends, fashion professionals and the future of eco-friendly under the Dome in Westfield Mall.

Neiman Marcus Beauty Event Exclusively for FGI Members

FGI - San Francisco is teaming up with San Francisco's Neiman Marcus store to host a private beauty seminar on September 10, 2009 featuring premier vendors like Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Le Mer Skin Care, and Jo Malone fragrances. Each vendor will discuss their products as they relate to this season's trends. Attendees will also have the chance to ask these experts on skincare and beauty advices.

Immediately after the seminar, members will be invited to the specific vendor counter for private consultations. Additionally, each attendee will receive a gift bag with deluxe samples from each presenting company.

Duquette's Inpired Guests

It was a fantastic Wednesday night at Baker Knupp & Tubbs. Local Interior Designers, FGI-SF members, and fans gathered together with champagne to mingle with Hutton Wilkinson, one of the co-authors of Tony Duquette - An Enchanted Vision.

Mr. Wilkinson discussed Tony Duquette's work and achievements. Book signing immediately followed the presentation and his book was also available for sale at that time. It was certainly an evening to remember for those who are fans of Tony Duquette!

May 09 Pret

We had a fantastic time at the May 2009 Pret at Jillian's in San Francisco on May 28, 2009! For this year's Pret, we did something different. Instead of a more formal public event, we kept the setting more intimate and invited only FGI members. It was our way to say 'Thank You' to our dedicated members.

Members came to mingle while watching the Fall 2009 RTW presentation. It was a great chance to meet other FGI members while enjoying a drink or two. For those members who attended, they also took home a gift bag to enjoy.

FGI-SF Presents Tony Duquette - Inspirations and Achievements

Join us on Wednesday, June 24 for an exciting presentation of "Tony Duquette - An Enchanted Vision."

One of the co-authors Hutton Wilkinson will discuss Tony Duquette's early childhood, discovery by Elsie de Wolfe, museum exhibitions, including his unprecedented exhibition at the Louvre in 1951, his work for stage and film as well as interior decoration and jewelry. Book signing will be immediately following the presentation. His book will also be available for sale during this event.

American artist and design legend Tony Duquette (1914–1999) was known for his over-the-top style in interiors, jewelry, costumes, and set design. His clients included Elizabeth Arden, the Duchess of Windsor, and Herb Albert. Hutton Wilkinson is a jewelry and interior designer and is also the president of Tony Duquette, Inc. He began working for Duquette at an early age.

See Some 'Green' - Learn Some 'Green'

Fashion Group International - San Francisco (FGI-SF) had a successful Earth Day event on Wednesday, April 22nd! We got a group of panelist from Discarded to Divine (D2D) to talk about how they started this wonderful charity event that benefits St. Vincent de Paul Society. When a lot of us are buying new clothes at the stores, professional and student designers throughout the Bay Area are donating their skills and time to create one of a kind couture garments for auction. What a great idea especially that the material used are unwanted clothing from the organization's warehouse. Who knew that trash can be turned into couture fashions?!

Before the start of the presentation, FGI members and guest enjoy delicious refreshments while they mingle. At the end of the presentation, there was a raffle drawing for wine, courtesy of our event sponsor Parducci.

Sally Rosen, founder of Discarded to Divine, talked about how she started the project. Interestingly, Project Runway was her inspiration! Like most new organizations, there were definitely challenges to find support in the beginning. But with her passion and perseverance, she was able to partner with FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) for the first fashion show and auction.

Some of the designers from this year's D2D were also present to discuss what inspired them when they created these designs. Louisa Parris, for example, was inspired by the artworks featured in the de Young Museum, while others were inspired by the fabrics.

So, what do the panelists think of the future of 'green' apparel? It is in the development process that in the future we'll be able to recycle discarded fabrics. Currently, scrap pieces of fabrics cannot be recycled because most are composed of mixed fibers (i.e. cotton with polyester.) However, new technology may be on the way to change that. We'll have to stay tune to find out. For now, apparel companies are focusing on how the fabrics are made, using natural dyes and organic fibers, for example.

FGI Presents 'Styling Tips and Tricks for the New Economy'

What is styling all about? What is it like to be a wardrobe stylist? How do you start a career in styling? These were some of the questions discussed during the 'Styling Tips and Tricks for the New Economy' event on January 28, 2009 hosted by FGI San Francisco and Art Institute of California.

Some of San Francisco's top stylists were invited as panelists to talk about their personal experience in the styling business. They discussed some of the best experiences they've had as well as the challenges that they've faced. Although it might seem like a fun glamorous job, it's not easy to be a stylist because some clients could be very difficult to deal with. Attendees were also given the opportunity to find out how to start a styling career.

Towards the end of the night, the panelists gave one of the audience members some styling tips and explained the type of style and colors that would work for her. Jewelry designer Corinthia Peoples of Corinthia Peoples Design also gave one of FGI's board members a makeover with her exclusive jewelries. She explained how certain jewelry styles can instantly update a woman's look.
